Royal BC Museum - Victoria

 

ROYAL BC MUSEUM, VICTORIA

On my vacation to Canada this year, me and my mother decided to visit Vancouver Island, Victoria. After our ferry ride, we reached Victoria. Our first destination was the Royal BC Museum. Unfortunately, when we visited, there was only one section available - British Columbia's Natural History. We thought that it would be a fairly short visit to the museum, but we were wrong! The Natural History section itself is enormous...! The moment we entered; we saw the ancient fossils. From Tyrannosaur footprint tracks to Mammoth teeth! It was spectacular!

You will be amazed by the realistic dioramas, the interactive exhibits, and the fascinating facts that you will learn along the way. Here are some of the highlights of the Natural History section that you won't want to miss:

- The Woolly Mammoth: As soon as you enter the section, you will be greeted by a life-sized replica of a woolly mammoth, the iconic ice age creature that once roamed BC. You can touch its fur, see its tusks, and learn about its evolution and extinction. There were white patches around and one of the staff members told us to touch it. It was cold, it was ice! Real ice! This shows the thoughtfulness put into the displays of the museum. The staff was really nice, if it weren't for them, I wouldn't have even noticed the ice!

- The Coastal Forest: This exhibit recreates the lush and diverse ecosystem of BC's coastal rainforest, where you can see bears, cougars, wolves, eagles, and more. You can also explore the forest floor, where you can find mushrooms, insects, and other small creatures. Everything seems so realistic! If one photographed or video graphed it without mentioning the location, it would be impossible to tell apart from a real forest.

- The Ocean Station: This exhibit takes you under the sea, where you can discover the rich and colorful marine life of BC's waters. You can see whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, otters, fish, coral, and more. You can also learn about the threats and challenges that these animals face in their environment. In the ocean station, there is a featured area where the big crustaceans are showed. There is also a wall, with all the different, wonderful underwater organisms on it and on small screens we can zoom in on the fish we want to have a closer look at and voila, we get to know about it and also have a much clearer view.

These are just some of the amazing things that you can see and do in the Natural History section of the Royal BC Museum. There is so much more to explore and learn, so don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in BC's natural history. You will leave with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the wonderful wildlife that surrounds us.  It was so mesmerizing to be walking through this museum!
